Driven, compassionate and always ahead of the game—these are words that best describe 33-year-old Jeremiah “Miah” Dato-on, whose confident and strong personality is admired by her leaders and colleagues alike.
Smart frontliner Miah Dato-on walks the talk on empowered women

Miah was among the first responders to deliver Smart load and connectivity devices to Odette-hit communities in Cebu, making it possible for typhoon victims to communicate with their loved ones. Although her ancestral home in San Fernando was not spared by Odette, she did not hesitate to report for work to serve customers’ needs for communication and connectivity.

In a team where women are outnumbered by men, Miah has proven that she is just as capable as her male teammates. “I believe that the roles of men and women complement each other, but women can do what men can and may even surpass it,” said Miah.

PLDT and Smart celebrate the National Women’s Month of March by recognizing the significant contribution of women employees to the company in particular, and to society in general. Fueled by ‘malasakit’ or compassion, Miah’s actions during the Odette crisis underscore women employees’ significant contribution to PLDT and Smart’s objectives.

Hitting quotas has been Miah’s mission for the past eight years as part of Smart’s Sales and Distribution Team. Despite being the youngest in the team, she manages the largest zone in terms of land area. “I am empowered because I am heard and my ideas are respected even though I am the youngest member of the team,” shared Miah.

Miah’s day normally starts with scheduled meetings and checking on deliverables to manage her team of distributors. With her morning jampacked, she has little time left to do house chores and attend to her daughter’s needs. “I am blessed to have my husband who balances out everything and fills in for me at home whenever I am most needed at work,” expressed Miah.

As an advocate of gender equality, Miah holds her husband in high regard, especially how he manages the household on top of his business ventures. “I may be the breadwinner in our household, but my husband’s role in childcare and in maintaining a happy home is equally important,” she said.

Miah’s career journey is one of many highlighting the commitment of PLDT and Smart to help the country attain the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG No. 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities. It is also testament to the PLDT group’s #SafeandSmart advocacy which promotes preparedness and immediate response through network resilience, continuous availability of communication services, and relief assistance to help communities mitigate disaster risks.
