COLUMBIA – BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina named seven Palmetto State businesses LiveLifeBlueSM workplace wellness competition winners this week.

The overall statewide winner was Southern Weaving, headquartered in Greenville.

The regional winners were:

•Lowcountry – Charleston County Government (over 500 employees), North Charleston; and City of Charleston (over 500 employees), Charleston
•Midlands – South Carolina Federal Credit Union (under 500 employees); Columbia; and Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (over 500 employees), Aiken
•Upstate – Southside Christian School (under 500 employees); and Founders Federal Credit Union (over 500 employees), Greenville

BlueCross presented each with a LiveLifeBlue trophy at meetings in the three regions this week.

The winning programs included a variety of activities, such as walking challenges, low-calorie menu options, onsite nurses, well-maintained wellness rooms, basketball courts and free healthy cooking classes. Some even provide child care for exercising employees. The groups also benefit from the BlueCross-managed incentive rewards program, health education materials and waived copays for routine preventive care. The companies nominated themselves.

At Southern Weaving, the company offers a number of activities, like a 10-mile Walk@Work program that kicks off each year with the BlueCross Walk@Lunch Day® and its annual Nintendo Wii Fit triathlon. It has special health programs, including an eight-week initiative called “Feel Great in Eight,” which incorporates screening and coaching, as well as a weight-loss program that challenges employees to lose 17 pounds in 17 weeks. Southern Weaving also has an onsite wellness clinic, health information center, quarterly health education sessions, an annual health and education fair and a quarterly emailed newsletter.

“We wanted these awards to inspire South Carolina employers — and it’s encouraging to see how our LifeLifeBlue winners embraced the challenge,” said BlueCross Senior Vice President Matt Shaffer. “Motivating people to make healthy lifestyle changes isn’t always easy. But month by month, these organizations are demonstrating that it can be done.”
