UnionPay International (UPI) announced today that all heavy rail stations (except for the Airport Express) of MTR, Hong Kong’s mass transit railway network, will support the UnionPay transit QR code starting February 20. Tourists from the Chinese mainland and residents in Hong Kong and Macao can pass the gate simply by displaying the MTR transit QR code accessible on the home page of the UnionPay App. This cooperation ensures a nearly full coverage of the UnionPay mobile payment services for public transport in Hong Kong.

UnionPay is an established payment brand among Hong Kong residents and merchants. UnionPay cards can be accepted across the city, and over 30 million cards have been issued in total. In 2018, UPI launched the Hong Kong and Macao versions of the UnionPay App for residents to enjoy mobile payment services locally or cross border. Almost all local issuers have integrated with the app, translating to 20 e-wallets in Hong Kong and Macao that support UnionPay cards. Over 2 million cards have been added to such wallets.

Currently, nearly 90,000 merchants in Hong Kong and Macao support UnionPay mobile payment, covering major transport services such as Kowloon Motor Bus, New Town Coach, Long Win Bus, taxis, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. As the UnionPay transit QR code is enabled for MTR, one of the largest transport systems in Hong Kong, UnionPay cardholders will be able to travel about more easily. Riders can pass the gate by linking the UnionPay App to the MTR app, known as MTR Mobile, in addition to using the UnionPay App directly.

The collaboration is made possible through the UPI Transit Service Platform which offers technical help that supports easy enablement of UnionPay transit QR for prepared merchants outside the Chinese mainland. For merchants ill-equipped for UnionPay acceptance, the platform can also provide full-process technical support covering gate or terminal modification and app development.

UnionPay mobile payment services have been enabled for more than 13 million merchants in more than 90 countries and regions outside China’s mainland, covering a wide range of use cases such as F&B, retail, and transportation. In the case of public transit, the services have been enabled for subway systems in places such as New York, Japan, and Moscow, and accepted by tens of thousands of taxis in markets including Japan and France.
