Beirut – 16 October, 2019
Zain Group, a leading mobile telecom innovator in eight markets across the Middle East and Africa, in partnership with Mentor Arabia Foundation and MBC al Amal held a charitable gala event in Beirut, under the theme ‘Power of Prevention’, and patronage of HE Prime Minister of Lebanon, Saad Hariri. The event was held in the presence of HM Queen Silvia of Sweden, President of Mentor International and attracted 500 political and economic identities from across the region. The fund-raising occasion saw performances by renowned artists Michel Fadel & Choir, and Egyptian singer, Abu.
The Mentor Arabia Foundation seeks to strengthen joint Arab and international cooperation, while building a solid alliance to accelerate the effort in halting the spread of substance abuse and other dangerous phenomena among youth in the region.
The gala ceremony included the launch of Mentor Arabia’s Youth Social Entrepreneurs Award that saw Ahmad Bayram from Syria and Maha Laziri from Morocco selected from the region, to represent Arab youth social entrepreneurs who are active in the area of positive social impact, who could then inspire their peers on ways to serve their community. This prestigious award recognizes and encourages young Arab leaders who have made exceptional contributions in social, humanitarian or development work, which have impacted society positively.
Queen Silvia’s visit included HM launching The Youth Mentoring Platform initiative, a partnership between Mentor Arabia and the American University of Beirut (AUB). The program aims to create a “dialogue space” for youth to express their views with respect to challenges they may face and exploring possible opportunities, solutions, and enabling factors to maximize their potential.
As part of Zain Group’s strategic partnership with the non-profit organization, the company’s Vice-Chairman and Group CEO,Bader Al-Kharafi has joined Mentor Arabia’s board of trustees.
Bader Al-Kharafi commented, “The youth are the future, it is as simple as that. In the Middle East this point is driven home further given the high percentage of young people in our demographic, and it is imperative for our own success to invest in youth development and encouragement to live and act positively.”
Al-Kharafi continued, “Zain has identified young people as one of the company’s key constituencies, and we are honored to part with organizations such as Mentor Arabia Foundation to drive agendas related to creating opportunities for them to reach their full potential. I congratulate all the participants and winners in this year’sYouth Social Entrepreneurs Award, and I can offer assurance of Zain’s ongoing support in this critical area of youth development.”
Thuraya Ismail, Executive Director, Mentor Arabia, said, “Our challenge is to create a healthy generation. All of us, parents, teachers and decision makers have a role in that. Our kids are the fruits of our seeds and they are the true fortune for our future development.”
Poverty, unemployment, school drop-outs, migration, war, disintegration, domestic violence, poor prospects for youth participation in decision-making, among other issues, were all essential catalysts to the establishment of an Arab foundation focused on issues of risky behavior prevention and awareness among children and youth.
Building on Mentor Arabia’s vision, the cooperation with Zain Group and MBC al Amal will see the three organizations jointly develop strategic partnerships with relevant entities and stakeholders; network with entities and organizations that are effective in the field of youth empowerment; and coordinate the various implementation phases of the joint programs. Collaborating closely together, the three entities will also look to advocate their endeavors through various media and social media platforms; and create fundraising opportunities for Mentor Arabia to scale up the number of program beneficiaries.
An extensive awareness raising and social media campaign to be undertaken by Zain, MBC al Amal and Mentor Arabia will embrace their combined goals to build the capacities and skills of children, youth, parents and other beneficiaries; develop policies and strategies for children and youth empowerment; promote youth participation in all areas of social work and human development; develop and disseminate prevention and youth empowerment studies and research; and forge partnerships and spread awareness through media and social media channels.
